Latest Earnings put Shine on Apple | The Apple without Steve Jobs

Apple Inc. (AAPL-Q340.65-7.83-2.25%) has once again posted the best quarterly earnings in its history – at least partially deflecting attention from CEO Steve Jobs’ announcement that he will be leaving the company indefinitely for medical reasons.

01-apple_tablet_day-sales profit

Apple posted company records in revenue, profit and earnings per share for the quarter ending Dec. 25, 2010. The iPhone-maker said revenue jumped 71 per cent to $26.7-billion (U.S.). Analysts had expected $24.4-billion, according to Thomson Reuters. Net profit for the quarter was $6-billion, or $6.43 per diluted share.

The company shipped 16.24 million iPhones in the quarter – which covers the busy holiday shopping period – an 86-per-cent increase over the same period a year ago. An inventory backlog kept those numbers from being even higher, said Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer and the man many believe will eventually become the permanent replacement for Mr. Jobs as CEO.

01-charting-quarter earnings report-share profit-company records

Mr. Cook chaired an analyst conference call Tuesday after Apple posted its results (Mr. Jobs did not sit in on the call). During the hour-long session, not a single analyst asked questions about the CEO’s health.

Instead, Mr. Cook covered some of the same ground the normally feisty Mr. Jobs does, but in a far tamer fashion. For example, Mr. Cook described some of the tablets powered by Google’s Android operating system as “a scaled-up smart phone, which is a bizarre product in our view.” As for newer tablets that are expected to hit the market soon, Mr. Cook said they “generally lack performance specs, lack prices, lack timing, so today they’re vapour,” a reference to “vapourware,” a tech industry term for products that sound appealing but don’t actually exist.

Mr. Jobs had made similar comments during the company’s previous quarterly earnings call. His name rarely came up during Tuesday’s call. In previous years, during Mr. Jobs’ other health-related absences, Apple has refused to comment, calling his medical issues a private matter.

One of the reasons Apple may feel comfortable about not disclosing more information on Mr. Jobs’ health is precedent. It appears U.S. regulators have never punished a public company for telling investors too little about a senior executive’s medical issues. Indeed, media reports indicate Apple looked into the legal implications of such disclosure when Mr. Jobs’ medical issues first surfaced more than six years ago, and decided at the time not to immediately inform the public.

Still, even as the company posts yet another record-breaking quarter, questions about Mr. Jobs’ health and future with the company are not likely to go away.

“You have to start with belief that a public company should be advising shareholders on a timely basis of any material changes in its affairs, and for many companies, the health of the CEO is relevant to the extent that the health issue makes it impossible for the CEO to function as expected by the marketplace,” said Stephen Griggs, executive director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance.

“I find it hard to understand how a board whose CEO is clearly very important to the company’s success would not disclose the very serious health concerns of that CEO.”

U.S. markets were closed Monday – the day Mr. Jobs made his announcement – for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. However Apple shares dropped sharply on European stock exchanges as a result of the news. U.S. investors followed that lead Tuesday morning, and Apple shares dropped more than 4 per cent in Tuesday morning trading, before bouncing back to eliminate about half that loss. The drop came despite overwhelming expectation that Apple would post perhaps its best quarter ever after markets closed – Apple products usually fly off the shelves during the holiday shopping season.

Apple shares jumped slightly during after-hours trading Tuesday, but not enough to offset earlier losses.

While few analysts see Mr. Jobs’ medical leave as anything but a negative for the company, the downside for Apple is somewhat limited by the fact that much of the company’s 2011 road map – which includes the anticipated release of a new-generation iPad and possibly another iPhone refresh – has already been determined. As BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis put it, Mr. Jobs’ absence isn’t a good thing for Apple, “but the company isn’t going to fall apart.

“We do mention that if the company had executed a succession plan that had Steve Jobs take a president title, with full control over strategic direction, the negative impact of this news may have been more muted,” he added.

Apple Earnings Shine With or Without Jobs (AAPL)

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) held up much better than many would have expected on the sad news that Steve Jobs is taking another medical leave of absence, but the hope was there for the earnings report and that kept shares from heading too far south despite the caution.  The Cult of Mac reported earnings of $6.43 EPS and $26.74 billion in revenues.  Thomson Reuters had estimates of $5.38 EPS and $24.38 billion in revenues.

01-apple inc.-logo-ipad sales-iphone sales-NASDAQ report

iPad sales were listed as 7.33 million and iPhone sales were listed as 16.2 million units.  Mac sales were 4.13 million units.  The company generated $9.8 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter.  We went ahead and broke out Apple’s liquidity, and that figure is now just under $60 billion at $59.707 billion versus $51.011 billion just one quarter before.  We broke these out individually below:

Liquidity DEC.25.  SEP.25
CashEq $10.734 $11.261
ShrTrm $16.243 $14.359
LngTrm $32.730 $25.391

The company’s gross margin came in at 38.5% compared to 40.9% in the year-ago quarter.  The biggest number is that Apple said international sales accounted for some 62% of the quarter’s revenue.

As far as guidance, Apple called for revenue of about $22 billion and diluted earnings of about $4.90 EPS.  Estimates for the next quarter are $4.43 EPS and $20.62 billion in revenues.

Steve Jobs was quoted in the release calling on record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales; and he noted, “We are firing on all cylinders and we’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers can’t wait to get their hands on.”

Apple shares closed down 2.25% at $340.65 after having been down as much as 5% earlier and after a $348.48 new all-time high on Friday.  Apple shares were halted in the after-hours right before the news, so this is going to be considered unfinished business until tomorrow’s opening bell.  As of 5:00 PM EST in the after-hours, shares are trading at $347.30 but had briefly been over $350.00 at new all-time highs.

iPad Now Deployed Or Tested In 80% Of The Fortune 100 (AAPL, RIMM), Apple Earnings Preview

Apparently the enterprise is not just sitting around, waiting for the BlackBerry Playbook to come out.

On Apple’s earnings call tonight, COO Tim Cook said that 80% of the Fortune 100 has deployed or is testing the iPad tablet.

That’s up from 65% of the Fortune 100 the last time Cook revealed that stat in October, 2010.

01-thebobs-Apple Crushes Earnings, Ships 7.3 Million iPads

One reason: The "consumerization" of the enterprise, where people can bring their personally-owned devices into their office and actually use them for corporate email, apps, etc.

Another: The enterprise app development capabilities of the iPad.

And yet another: Cook says that CIOs are realizing that having productive and creative employees is more important than having everyone using the same equipment.

That’s good news for the future of the iPad, but also the iPhone and Mac, too.

iPad 3 waiting in the wings?

The news of the iPad 2 release is barely cold, but sources say it might not be anything to get too excited about. The iPad 2 is, reportedly, a bit of a rush job and there were some serious problems getting it together. Inside sources are already suggesting the iPad 3 is the one to look out for and it might be coming sooner than you think.

01-ipad3-waiting to release

Rumors have it that the iPad 3 is in development already and might roll off the lines for release for the holiday season. That means the iPad 3 could potentially be on the market as early as 6 months after the iPad 2 is released in Canada on March 25th.

The iPad 2 is going to have better speakers and a faster processor, however, the iPad 3 is the one that will likely get the jazzed up screen and other necessary components that original iPad owners have made a stink about. The iPad 2 might very well be a simple stop gap aimed at keeping the iPad name new and fresh.

Apple is looking at some pretty serious competition as of late. Android tablets, such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Motorola Xoom, are getting some rave reviews and the talk of HTC jumping into the game has really pushed Apple to make a move. Whether this was the right move or not remains to be seen. I, personally, am curious to see how Apple plans to market the iPad 3, if rumors are to be believed, so shortly after the release of the iPad 2 Time will only tell.

iPad 2 launch | Infinity Blade getting graphical overhaul for today’s iPad 2 launch

The iPad 2 launches today in the US, and the developer of the most advanced iOS game is launching an update to take advantage of the new technology. Infinity Blade’s about to get even prettier.

01-infinityblade-game-ipad2-inbuilt-software

Chair’s epic (and, indeed, Epic) action-RPG has taken the iPhone and iPad world by storm with its near console-standard graphics and absorbing touchscreen gameplay. It was designed to push the A4 chip in the iPhone 4 and original iPad to its limit, so now that a device is being released with double the processing power and nine times the graphical power a refresh is needed.

In what Chair is calling “the ultimate “show off your iPad 2’s graphics prowess” app,” Infinity Blade will receive a bunch of optimizations and improvements to take advantage of the iPad 2′s dual-core A5 chipset.

According to Chair technical director, Geremy Mustard, “The iPad 2 is a huge leap up in processing power from the first iPad, and is more powerful than the impressive iPhone 4.” He continues: “The whole operating system will feel even more responsive and smooth. For developers like us who are always pushing the hardware to its limits, the iPad 2 will allow us to do things people won’t believe can be done on a tablet device.”

This will be the second notable update for Infinity Blade in the space of just over a week. The Deathless King update added a whole new area to explore, making the blockbuster game even more of an appealing buy. For new iPad 2 owners, it’s looking to be that essential show-off app for your new bit of kit.

Apple iPad 2 Shipping Times On The Rise After Being Available Online For Just Hours

Boom. A mere three hours after it first went up for order, iPad 2 shipping times have already slipped from 3-5 business days to 5-7 business days.

What does this mean? Exactly what we thought it meant when Apple refused to take preorders before release to begin with: Apple knew they couldn’t satisfy demand for a nine day preorder. They’ve got constrained supply.

01-Screenshot-ipad with Wi-Fi-price list

If you want an iPad 2, either prepare to get in line or order it now. That shipping time is only going to rise as the day goes on… I wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit 2-4 weeks by the end of the day.

Edit: As of 8:38am, it’s now 2-3 weeks shipping date. Hope you got your order in, guys.
