Tandem Wipers
A wiper motor, cranks, wiper arms, and wiper blades make up a full wiper unit. An electric pump, hoses, container washer fluid, and nozzles make up the washing system. These two mechanisms work together to provide a successful cleaning system.
Wind Shield Tandem Wipers System Specifications
- The following criteria must be fulfilled by the wiper system:
- Snow and water removal
- Dirt removal
- Activity at high (up to +80 degrees Celsius) and low temperatures (upto -30 Degrees Celsius)
- Tolerance to acids, alkalis, salts, and ozone corrosions
- For a passenger vehicle, the service life is 1.5 million wipe cycles.
Windshield Wipers:
Conventional wiper drives have only one direction of rotation, and the direction of wiping is changed mechanically. The new electronically controlled motor reverses its direction of rotation at the turning point of the wiper – therefore, the mechanical components require less space.
The electronic controller ensures a maximum visibility area at all times, irrespective of wiping speed, coefficient of friction or wind force. Through exact adherence to the wiping angle, it is possible to reduce the tolerance distance to the edge of the windscreen to a minimum and thus to enlarge the swept area. The controller can detect obstacles such as packed snow at the reversing points and automatically reduces the swept area to prevent the system from blocking. The speed of the motor is reduced before reversal to ensure quiet running.
The electronic speed controller is also very practical in conjunction with a rain sensor: depending on the quantity of water on the windshield, the drive unit can be operated at a continuously variable wiping speed.
The electronically controlled wiper motor also allows the use of two-motor wiper systems. Each wiper arm is moved by its own drive unit, and the electronic controller is responsible for the coordination of the movements.
History of Wind – Shield Wipers
The first windshield wiper was invented around 10 years after the first car was built. The idea of a windshield wiper came about when the president of Trico drived his vehicle on a rainy day in the United States. Sadly, he hit a kid due to his failure to properly see the lane. The boy wasn't seriously injured and in rainy weather he decided to deal with the issue of poor view. This prompted the windshield wipers to be born. In 1917 the windshield wiper blade was invented by Trico, also known as the tri-continental company.
The first wiping design was made by a rubber blade rotated manually on the windshield. Obviously this was a disappointment, and a vacuum-driven wiper mechanism quickly substituted it. However, the fact that its operating speed has changed with the speed of the vehicle threatened this design.
This malfunction ultimately causes an electric motor to be attached to the wiper arm. This is primarily the design still in use. The new study focuses on the use of synthetic rubber rather than natural rubber.
Types of Windshield Cleaning Mechanisms
- Tandem Wipers
- Opposed Wipers
- Tandem Wipers with aerodynamic characteristics
- Single arm wipers (No control)
- Single arm wipers (Controlled)
Tandem Wipers Blade Material
The rubber compound consists of three different combinations:
- Natural rubber
- Synthetic rubber
- Two elements that are either synthetic-synthetic or natural-synthetic-synthetic
For the wiping quality at different temperatures, the rubber properties are significant. And when they get cold, the lowest temperature are the harder to get a decent wiping consistency. Tests showed that in low temperatures, natural rubber is the most effective.
Advantages of Tandem Wipers:
- This system requires no connecting rods
- Reduced space requirements and
- Lower weight.
Features & Benefits of Tandem Wipers:
An extended parking position is available as an additional function: this means that when the wipers are switched off, the wiper arms are parked under the trailing edge of the bonnet. This improves the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Driving noise is reduced and the driver's field of vision is enlarged. At the same time, the risk of injury is reduced in the event of accidents with pedestrians and two-wheeled traffic.
