Chand Baori Abhaneri | Chand Baori India | Chand Baori Step Well | Chand Baori The Deepest Step Well In The World | Rajasthan Tourism

01-chand baori abhaneri - chand baori india

A millennium ago, step wells were fundamental to life in the driest parts of India. These unique structures, hewn from stone, provided year round access to groundwater, and were a focal point for the community. During the sixth and seventh centuries the inhabitants developed a method of gaining access to clean, fresh ground water during the dry season for drinking, bathing, watering animals and irrigation. However the significance of this invention “The Step well” goes beyond its utilization application. As their name suggests, step wells comprise a series of steps descending from ground level to the water source as it recedes following the rains. When the water level was high, user needed only to descend a few steps to reach it. When it was low, several levels would have to be negotiated.

The Chand Baori (the biggest baori of India) at Abaneri is India’s largest step-well and a great pit-stop when driving across Rajasthan. Chand-baori is the amazing and elaborate architecture. As you step inside the compound you are filled with pure delight and wonder – how could the human mind use a simple thing like steps to create such attractive patterns? In all the 100-foot deep baori has almost 3500 narrow steps in 13 stories. Its beauty and design has not only stood the test of time (it was built somewhere in the 8th or 9th century) but also the abuses of human neglect.

01-chand baori india - chand baori temple - chand baori history

Chand Baori – in the village of Abhaneri, near Jaipur in the Dausa District of Rajasthan – is the country’s largest step well and one of its deepest. Constructed around 850 AD, it sits in front of the now ruined Harshat Mata temple. In Steps to Water: The Ancient Step wells of India, Morna Livingston notes that it is one of the few water buildings with extensive additions, this making it a fine example of two classical periods of architecture.

01-chand baori jaipur-modern wonders of india

Unlike other old wells, which only benefited from minor mending and whitewashing, Chand Baori was refurbished over the centuries: Mughals rebuilt the upper stories as a palace in the eighteenth century, and added a four-sided arcade which effectively closes the well. A terrace above the arcade offers unbroken views of the Harshat Mata temple and farmland to the south and east. The step well is still in excellent condition as a result of these additions and recent restoration work.

01-rajasthan tourism - abhaneri step well jaipur

The design and ornamentation of the two sections of the well – the upper one, Muslim; the lower, Hindu – are quite different. The short and square Hindu columns – built from extremely hard, almost black, stone of unknown origin – feature crisp carvings and rest on similarly carved railings. According to Livingston, “The simplicity and brevity of the column shafts are attractive, and the pavilions they enclose are dark, simple and well proportioned. In the Muslim portion of the well, however, the columns are carved in an unidentified hard green stone. The palace features more curves and organic shapes, in contrast to the straight lines found beneath it. Livingston also points out the spatial compactness of the stair triangles that run parallel to the step well's edge. “The rise-to-run for each flight adds no more than eighteen inches [45 cm] of width to eight feet [2.4 m] of drop, making an extremely sharp descent. The wall is so steep that the top of the stair triangles, seen from the pond’s brim, alternately hide and reveal the people going down from above.”

Windows 8 | Cool Features

Microsoft's new Windows OS, Windows 8 has permanently changed the way Windows users see the world's most common operating system. And for the first time in Windows history, it even looks different.

01-windows 8-theme-features-microsoft windows 8

Better Designed Interface

01-microsoft windows 8-desktop screen-home screen-home page

Instead of the usual desktop and home screen, your home page is actually colored tiles, each a one-click access to Windows's most important features. Inspired by a Swiss design principle called Metro, It's simpler, and (for Windows, I must reiterate) cuter than what Windows has been unto) cuter. It also gets rid of clicking through many menus to get where you want to go.

Compatible with Tablets, Laptops and Desktops

01-windows 8-compatible with tablets-compatible with laptops

The simple interface is perfectly compatible with any device - it lends itself perfectly to touchscreen as well as the regular desktop. Windows puritans can still access the old desktop view with just a click or tap.

The software is also optimized for ARM-based processors, a default component in smartphones and tablets  due  their energy efficient nature.

Faster

It loads in less than eight seconds, and the Metro interface loads apps in a snap. Even the hardware offers faster solution, via the USB 3.0 and Hyper-V to put it in comparison, its as fast as Apple's iOS (iPhone/iPad) and Mac OS X Lion.

Windows App Store

After everyone else, Windows has entered the app game. This means more apps designed specifically for the Metro UI.

Top 5 Phones For Social Network Like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, Google Plus, MySpace, LinkedIn

According to recent reports, accessing Social media on phones has overtaken usage on computers.

You don't need a browser, or even any internet connection on your phone to access Facebook anymore. Further, mobile users spend a lot more time than PC users on social networking sites.

HTC Salsa

01-HTC salsa-Facebook-top 5 phone for facebook

The blue Facebook button is the first thing you notice about the Salsa. It's certainly not an awkwardly placed blue dot you might accidentally thumb over. It's also very Facebook - the backlit button pulses and blinks when something worthy of being Shared happens.

Press it once, and you can update your Facebook status, or share something with a Friend via the “Post to” box. A long press, and you're instantly at Facebook Places. Or, if you find an interesting website while browsing on the 3G/Wi-fi, press the button to instantly share the link. Even the music you're listening is not spared;song information can be statused instantly.
The phone's desktop widgets are also Facebook;instead of the default weather updates, you have a regular Friend Stream, along with a Facebook Chat widget. Photos can be automatically uploaded to Facebook if you enable it.

Vodafone 555 Blue

01-vodafone 555 blue - top 5 phone for facebook-social network-twitter-myspace

If there's a Facebook phone, can a budget Facebook phone be behind? That's the 555 Blue from Vodafone. QWERTY keypad, a decent 2.4-inch display, and a 2-megapixel camera.
It plays music (16 GB - expandable).

And it's very, very, Facebook. When you turn on the phone for the first time, you have to log into Facebook. Every 20 minutes, it refreshes your current Facebook information. The budget status also extends to the display. There's no 3G or Wi-fi either. Add that to the a 800MHz processor, and you 'll be irritated when you have to do more than updating your Facebook status.

Motorola EX 225

01-motorola EX 225-top 5phone for linkedin

It's not here yet, and there's only one photo of it - but that's the power of social media for you.
Expected to be a feature phone with BREW (no Android), the phone's rumored to spec a 2.4-inch TFT-LCD display, a 3 megapixel camera, a five row QWERTY keyboard and the Facebook blue button/bump. Motorola's first Facebook phone is clearly playing it safe. And, with Google's takeover of Motorola Mobility, a Google + phone might have been a better idea.

BlackBerry Torch 9800

01-blackberry Torch 9800-top 5 phones

It's spacious, gorgeous and fabulous. it's also the first Blackberry to feature a physical QWERTY keyboard, along with a with a sliding multi-touch screen display, which makes a big difference when you're scrolling through tweets and updates.

The comfy backlit QWERTY keyboard, combined with the touchscreen Sure Type keyboard makes for a pleasurable typing experience. It also kicked off Blackberry's slow foray into better social media integration in phones.

INQ Cloud Touch

01-INQ cloud touch-top 5 phones for facebook

There is no point to buying the Cloud Touch if not for the social media. The enhanced Facebook widget feeds news, notifications and updates from Friends, and the phone uses Facebook's Social Graph API to simultaneously select and feed you more from your five most-contacted friends.

The INQ Cloud touch is also beautiful, in a feminine way - there's a reassuringly thick bezel design bordering the phone.
The Cloud Touch is synonymous with the Facebook phone tag because every tiny Facebook feature - News, People, Events, Notifications and Places has it's own live widget.

Even your Facebook Chat, Friends, Messages, News Feed, Notifications, Photos, Profile have their own direct app shortcuts.
Facebook's also woven into the phone.

Your regular Android calendar adds Facebook birthdays and Events from Facebook. Your INQ Contacts will include an extra tab for people who are on Facebook

Memory expandable to 32 GB

Fluency app powers faster writing - it may be a trivial detail, but Touch Type's is one of the best word prediction tech out there.

iPhone 4

01-iphone 4- facebook-myspace-linkedin-twitter-orkut

Facebook on the iPhone 4 is not just about the Facebook app. It's combining geo-enabled apps with happenings events, hangouts (Prowl Owl, Loopt), and the fastest social sharing of content in beautiful ways (BlipSnips, Postage). There's also support for social media multitasking (HootSuite, Seesmic), voice commands (Talking Facebook) and staying in touch with Friends across various platforms (Friends for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace & LinkedIn)

Google Wave

Google Wave is a new tool for communication and collaboration on the web, coming later this year. Here’s the look of the new google wave.

01-google wave logo - wavelogo - google

What is a wave?

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

01-google-wave-what is google wave-communication tool-google-gmail

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

The new system(google wave)  is a combination of email and instant messaging and document-, maps- image- and video-sharing all housed in one spot.Much like a conference call, it also allows for conversations between more than two people to happen simultaneously. And it can happen in different languages using an instantaneous translation tool. And because it all takes place inside a web browser, there is no special software to download or plug-in – which means it can be used from any computer or internet-enabled mobile phone.

Wisden Drops Pakistan Player From Cricketers Of The Year

01-the wisden cricketer-wisden magazine

The Wisden Cricketers' Almanack has broken with tradition and named only four cricketers of the year for its 2011 edition because of the Pakistan spot-fixing scandal, editor Scyld Berry said on Friday.

The publication has named five players since 1926 but this year only Bangladesh's Tamim Iqbal and England's Eoin Morgan, Chris Read and Jonathan Trott made the shortened list.

Three Pakistan players Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt  were banned for a minimum of five years each for manipulating incidents in last year's Lord's Test against England.

01-banned pakistan players-5 years banned by ICC

Fast bowler Amir, who was named Pakistan's player of the series against England, has been widely reported by British media to be the name omitted from the prestigious list.

"The fifth Cricketer of the Year, I can reveal, was going to be one of three Pakistan players - Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir - until they were banned by the ICC's independent tribunal for the bowling of deliberate no-balls in the fourth Test at Lord's," Berry said in a column in The Telegraph newspaper.

"Which one of the three was selected? I am not going to say because it would not be in keeping with cricket's tradition of fairness."

The Wisden Cricketers of the Year dates back to 1889 and is bestowed upon players who made the biggest impact during the previous English summer.

Rio Is An Unstoppable Flight Of Fun

01-rio-2011-movie

In the world of toons, disability and phobias are treated with a little bit sensitivity and a great lot of adventure. And so whether it's Dumbo with his exceptionally enormous ears, Nemo and his 'lucky' fin or a discordant Mumble's much-disapproved flair for tap dancing, they've all applied these so-called drawbacks to their advantage.

Although 3D feature Rio's feathery hero Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), a Spix's Macaw never achieves the greatness of the afore-mentioned fellas, he ensures a delightful hour and a half with his nervous natter and uncharacteristic ways. For one, he doesn't know how to fly.

There's no pixie dust to get him off the ground either. Instead he's a home-schooled, hot-chocolate sipping, physics genius -- a spectacle-free extension of his nerdy and kind mistress, Linda (Leslie Mann) since forever, alright, make that 15 years.

Earlier reels explain how a freak accident brought him to a sleepy town in Minnesota where Blu and his favourite girl now lead a comfortable and cozy existence until a Brazilian scientist lands on their door urging them to fly with him to Rio, allowing director Carlos Saldanha to take a break from the pasty appearance of Ice Age movies to offer a eye-catching tour of his hometown whilst providing a spirited backdrop to/of Rio.

As it turns out, Blu is the only surviving male of his species and is expected to save his kind from extinction by mating with Jewel (Anne Hathaway [ Images ]), the only female in that order. Only Jewel is no eyelash-fluttering Daisy but a fiendishly feisty Brazilian babe, bringing her claws out at any swaggering cockatoo in sight, including Nigel (Jemaine Clement excels in a generating marmalade-smooth menace). The latter, of course, is the quintessential villain of this piece taking a march (flight?) over his human counterpart. Like a ubiquitous henchman on their trail, this bitter ex-star of a popular bird show refuses to rest till he's delivered the cerulean Macaws to a typically greedy poacher.

So what's the deal? The macaws have to mate. The cockatoo has to stop them. The poacher wants the birds. The bumbling sidekicks don't care. The birds want to escape. Linda and the scientist are on their own trip. There's an orphan suffering from conscience imbalance issues. Also, not too long afterwards we run into a cardinal, a canary, a toucan and a seriously slobbering bulldog. Wait, did I mention big and burly gangs of pick pocketing, pelvic-thrusting monkeys?

Clearly, Rio has a *lot* on its mind. This is both fantastic and fatiguing.

While there's absolutely no dearth of visual attractions, a wild assortment of lively humour and cultural clichés like Brazilian beaches, carnival parade, Christ the redeemer, samba, romantic trams, the works, Rio's optic verve and meticulous computer graphics wouldn't be half as effective if not for its terrific voice cast.

Anne Hathaway's Jewel is a well-composed mix of puckish glamour and alluring aggression. Whereas Eisenberg moves away from his cold, hasty talking style from The Social Network to acquire an adorable James Stewart-inspired panicky tone complimenting Hathaway's bossy aura in more ways than one.

Others like Clement, George Lopez, Tracy Morgan [ Images ], Jamie Foxx [ Images ], Leslie Mann and Will.i.am lend the funny to their lines through their respective cameos, even if the spectacular quotient isn't enough to rank them alongside memorable subordinates like Thumper, Flounder, Dory or Kaa, which brings us to the flip side of Rio.

The narrative, owing to its unstoppable pace, doesn't concern itself too much with character or subplot development. Saldanha never allows us to feel personal about Blu or his limitations. There's hardly ever a trace of discontentment or alienation in his body language. And because there is no emotional attachment to him, one experiences no real joy in his triumph either.

Moreover, the screen is cramped with so many characters and the constantly popping humour, there's already too much to keep up with. Luckily, even at its gimmicky best, Rio is entertaining enough to forgive its refusal to soar any higher.

Dhoni's Super Kings All Fired Up To Face Gambhir's Knights

01-kolkata Knight Riders-logo-ipl4

Chennai: It will be a classic case of 'friends turning into foes' when Mahendra Singh Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clash with Gautam Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the opening match of the IPL tomorrow, less than a week after the duo guided India to their historic World Cup triumph in Mumbai.

01-Mahendra_Singh_Dhoni_Chennai_Super_Kings_Wallpapers

As the cash-rich Twenty20 cricketing extravaganza gets underway at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, it will be the beginning of new era sans Lalit Modi, who was the face of the event during the first three editions.

Also this will be the first time that the league will feature 10 teams with the inclusion of Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

It will be there for all to see how the BCCI organizes an event where Modi used to have a final say in every aspect. The former IPL commissioner and vice-president of BCCI has since then been suspended and now has taken refuge in London after the cricket board pressed numerous charges of corruption against him.

After a hugely successful Players' Auction which saw some of the young Indian players commanding astronomical prices, the Chirayu Amin-led IPL governing council will now look to capitalize on India's World Cup triumph which has definitely upped the stakes by manifold.

Coming back to tournament, defending champions CSK will certainly start as the overwhelming favourites against a team that hasn't been able to cash in on its enormous fan following across India, thanks to its principal owner Shah Rukh Khan.

After having failed to make it to the semi-finals during the last three editions, the KKR management led by SRK and co-owner Jay Mehta have gone for a revamped side with Gautam Gambhir at the helm and T20 specialist Yusuf Pathan as one of the marquee players.

With Kolkata's favorite son Sourav Ganguly no longer a part of the team, it will be a big challenge for Gambhir and his boys to start winning and get the cricket crazy Kolkatans rooting for them.

The bigger challenge will be to get past CSK who have inarguably been the most consistent team during the last three editions with one championship, one runners-up and a last four finish. The biggest strength for CSK has been their ability to retain the most of their core players save Muttiah Muralitharan who will don the Kochi jersey.

Best 5 Holiday Movies In 2011You Don’t Want To Miss

01-Shiloh-Fernandez-Amanda-Seyfried-in-Red-Riding-Hood-best hollywood movies in 2011

2011 has been a disappointing year so far for Hollywood with box office duds like "Red Riding Hood" and "From Prada to Nada". Yet, there's much to be anticipative of. Here are a few movies you'd surely want to wait for.

Beginners:

Beginners is a beautifully quirky film about how a man handles a bundle of shocking news (his elderly father announces that he has terminal cancer and that he's gay) while he tries to clutch on to a relationship. Evan McGreggor stars as the lead in this delightful journey about understanding, accepting and appreciating life.

Henry's Crime

If you've watched "Double Jeopardy", you know the US law, also applicable in India that forbids a person from being convicted of the same offense again. This loophole in the legal system is used by ex-con Henry (Keanu Reeves) in planning to rob the same bank he has falsely been convicted of robbing. Pickled along with this, is Henry's love story with a cynical woman called Julie (Vera Farmiga) who eventually becomes his partner in crime. Reeves hasn't been tremendously successful in comedies since "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey", yet this one seems promising.

Take Me Home Tonight

From the goofy Eric Forman in "That '70s Show" to the sinister Venom in "Spiderman 3", Topher Grace has come a long way. This re-creation of a regular 80's high school rom-com finds him doing what celluloid teens over decades have done, to impress the one they love: lie and pretend to be rich. Though predictable, the film has a heart-warming innocence which will surely keep the box office cash register ringing.

Limitless

This one subscribes to the perfect Hollywood formula. A man consumes a top-secret drug that extends supernatural abilities. But since Hollywood breeds on excess, every blessing becomes a curse and his special powers become a threat to his life. Bradley Cooper plays the lead in this action-packed thriller that also stars Robert De Niro. Whether the film's success will be limited or not is yet to be told but it's sure to keep you at the edge of your seat.

The Hangover Part 2

Every immensely successful film has to be remade, copied or at best, continued with a sequel. So, Hangover Part 2 borrows the best parts from its prequel and multiplies the madness by 100. This time around the band of drunken boys head to Bangkok for a wedding they would never forget or not. A series of singular events follow in the morning after a night of heavy intoxication. Average run-rate highest in 2011 World Cup: ICC

01-cricket_world_cup_2011 logo

Mumbai, April 4 (IANS): The 2011 World Cup was the first in history to have an average run-rate of more than five per over, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Monday.

The average run-rate stood at 5.03 per over in the tournament that concluded on Saturday, an ICC statement said.

The previous highest was 4.95 runs per over in the 2007 edition in the West Indies. This trend goes on to show how scoring rate has changed since the early editions in 1975, 1979 and 1983, when 60-overs-a-side matches were played.

In contrast to the overall trend of an increasing run rate, the average runs per wicket has remained consistent throughout the history of the competition. This is with the slight exception of 1979, which was played in disappointing weather early in the English summer.

"The statistics are a clear illustration of the exciting cricket that was played during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011," said David Richardson, ICC General Manager.
